"Dokdo is Liancourt Rocks?"... Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, Dokdo notation errors

[News Space=Reporter seungwon lee] Southeast Asian major airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, are causing controversy by indicating 'Dokdo' as 'Liancourt Rocks' on the map services they provide on their personal seat screens.

The name 'Liancourt Rocks' is derived from the name of the French whaling ship that discovered Dokdo, 'Liancourt.' In particular, 'Liancourt Rocks' is a term that Japan is spreading in the international community with the intention of diluting Korea's sovereignty over Dokdo.

Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University said, "We were able to discover distorted Dokdo notations on Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, etc. through reports from netizens." He continued, "The incorrect notation of Dokdo by Southeast Asian airlines is a problem, but the bigger problem is the notation of 'Liang Kru Reef' on Google Maps."

He emphasized, "Google labels it as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan," and "In countries other than Korea and Japan, it labels it as 'Lianklou Reefs.'"

He also explained, "Since many countries refer to this Google map, we need to take steps to mark this part as 'Dokdo' first."

Meanwhile, Professor Seo plans to soon send a protest email to Southeast Asian airlines, which are used by numerous travelers, to ensure that Dokdo is correctly labeled.
