[CEO Hye-yum] A trip of three flavors (meaning, interest, fun) for Chairman Yong-jin Jeong of Shinsegae’s birthday

[News Space=Reporter seungwon lee] September 19th is the 56th birthday of Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin. It is his first birthday since taking office as chairman. It is his first promotion in 18 years since 2006. To celebrate his birthday, let’s share meaningful, fun, and interesting stories related to Chairman Chung Yong-jin.

On September 19, 1968, the day he was born, Seoul experienced an unusually high temperature, and the entire country soared to a high of 31.4 degrees, 6 degrees higher than the average. Even after 50 years, the weather conditions are similar.

The major articles that appeared on all eight pages of the Chosun Ilbo that day are as follows.

President Park arrives in Sydney... departing for New Zealand today, Soviet Foreign Ministry denies reports of Zond 5 recovery, declares immediate support for China in case of invasion of Albania, if Soviet Union intervenes in West Germany, Allied powers take immediate action. US State Department warns, NASA Web Director resigns in aftermath of US-Soviet space race... Dissatisfied with budget cuts despite Apollo achievements, movie actor Shin Young-gyun released... summary sentence of 30,000 won, 69th anniversary of Railroad Day, 69 clothing items burned down in large fire at Dongdaemun Market, movie actor Shin Sung-il summoned for questioning... denies assault charges, runs wild with knife in court... complains about dismissal of indictment, "I'll kill the judge" threat, shock greater than watching wrestling on TV, fainting and other incidents occur.

◆ Birth, education, and family

Chairman Jeong Yong-jin has changed since taking office as chairman in March of this year. Perhaps it is because of his image management to maintain his dignity as the chairman of the group and his determination to focus more on management due to difficult internal and external circumstances, but he has almost stopped watching baseball and using SNS, which he enjoys. After the season opened, he not only did not show up at the baseball stadium, but he also cut ties with SNS, where he used to frequently post about his daily life.

Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin is the grandson of Jeong Sang-hee, who served as the 4th and 5th National Assembly member (former House of Peers) of the First Republic and as the chairman of Samho Textiles, and the maternal grandson of Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-chul. His mother is Shinsegae Group Chairman Lee Myung-hee (the youngest daughter of Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-chul's 3 sons and 5 daughters, graduated from Ewha Girls' High School and Ewha Womans University's Department of Living Arts, and married Jung Jae-eun in 1967), his father is Shinsegae Group Honorary Chairman Chung Jae-eun, and his younger sister is Shinsegae Department Store Division President Chung Yoo-kyung. He is a maternal cousin of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who is the same age.

Chairman Lee Myung-hee inherited the Shinsegae Group after her father passed away. When it declared separation from Samsung Group in 1991, Shinsegae only had two department stores and the Chosun Hotel. After sending off her father in 1987, Chairman Lee Myung-hee got the idea for starting a business while using a large discount store while staying in the United States. In 1993, she established E-Mart, the first large discount store in Korea, and hit the jackpot. After that, she established Starbucks Korea in 1997 and took over the Korean coffee market.

Chairman Jeong graduated from Gyeonggi Elementary School, Cheongun Middle School, and Gyeongbok High School. He dropped out of Seoul National University’s College of Humanities, Department of Western History, and went to study abroad in the United States in 1994. After completing his degree in business administration at Indiana University, he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University. He is currently the owner of the professional baseball team SSG Landers, and was inaugurated as chairman of Shinsegae Group in March.

He has two sons and two daughters, the eldest son Jung Hae-chan (born May 13, 1998), the eldest daughter Jung Hae-in (born May 18, 2000), the second daughter Jung Hae-yoon (born 2013), and the second son Jung Hae-jun (born 2013). Jung Yong-jin calls his children 1 through 4.

Mr. Jeong Yong-jin's eldest son, Jeong Hae-chan, completed his high school education in the United States and entered Cornell University's Department of Hotel Management in 2017. Despite being a student, he joined the Westin Chosun Hotel Seoul, a hotel affiliate of Shinsegae Group, as an intern. In 2015, he introduced Starwood Four Points by Sheraton to Korea and opened the boutique hotel 'L'Escape', which emerged as a new hot place, drawing attention.

He enlisted in the army as an active-duty soldier in November 2021 and was discharged in May 2023. After that, he completed an experiential internship in financial consulting at Samjung KPMG, one of the top four accounting firms in Korea, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in sports and fitness management at Indiana University Bloomington Campus in 2024.

Perhaps because Jeong Hae-chan's major was hotel management, after Jeong Hae-chan entered college, the number of hotels operated by Shilla Hotels & Resorts increased significantly from the existing four (The Westin Chosun Hotel Seoul, The Westin Chosun Hotel Busan, L'Escape Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton Seoul Station) to nine with the opening of five additional hotels (Chosun Palace Seoul Gangnam, Gravity Pangyo Autograph Collection, Four Points by Sheraton Seoul Myeongdong, Grand Josun Busan, and Grand Josun Jeju).

If Jung Hae-chan resembles his father, Vice Chairman Jung Yong-jin, his daughter Jung Hae-in inherited Go Hyun-jung’s round face and refreshing features. Like Lee Jae-yong’s daughter Lee Won-joo, Jung Hae-in also has a history of communicating with the public through SNS. While studying at a boarding school in Massachusetts, Jung Hae-in opened a SNS account called ASK.FM, which is popular among American teenagers.

As it was a site based on questions and answers, people who were curious about Jung Hae In asked numerous questions. When asked what brand of cosmetics she likes to use, she gave a detailed answer, saying, "For sunscreen, Dr. Jart. For base, Biotherm toner or gel cream. For concealer, Chanel. For eyelash curler, Shiseido." When told that she resembles her biological mother, she replied, "That's not what you mean. She's so pretty." When asked about her stepmother, Han Ji Hee, she garnered attention by saying, "She's a kind person. I feel bad even calling her stepmother. There's no one who has treated me with this much love until now."

They are Protestant believers and attend Onnuri Church. Both Jeong Yong-jin and Han Ji-hee are Onnuri Church believers, and their remarriage ceremony was officiated by the late Pastor Ha Yong-jo, founder of Onnuri Church. The whole family goes to church together on weekends. There was even a video of their second son Jeong Hae-jun praying on Jeong Yong-jin’s Instagram.

After remarrying, I built a house as my new home in Baekhyeon-dong, Seo-Pangyo, Pangyo New Town, and we live there now.

◆ May is a special month for Chairman Jeong Yong-jin… Both his marriages took place in May, and his two children were born in May.

Chairman Jeong Yong-jin married Ko Hyun-jung in May 1995 and divorced in 2003. At the time, Ko Hyun-jung announced her retirement from the entertainment industry by marrying Shinsegae Group Chairman Jeong Yong-jin at the same time as the end of Hourglass. It was such a big topic that it was the beginning and end of entertainment news in 1995. They had a son and a daughter and seemed to be living well, but after they divorced on November 19, 2003, a huge number of rumors poured out.

At the time, there were rumors that he had paid 1.5 billion won in compensation and a Starbucks coffee shop in Insa-dong worth 4 billion won, or that he had asked for Shinsegae Department Store but was rejected, but this has not been confirmed.

After that, he had a private wedding with Han Ji-hee in May 2011. Han, a flautist, studied abroad in Austria and graduated from the Vienna National University of Music Preparatory School, and then went on to study abroad in France at the Paris Boulogne National Conservatory and the United States at the Oberlin School of Music. He returned to Korea and received a master's degree from Ewha Womans University. He received a doctorate from Seoul National University Graduate School of Music in 2023. He has been a guest performer for the Seoul Baroque Ensemble and Wonju City Symphony Orchestra. He continues to perform in various ways and also lectures at universities.

Han Ji-hee, who is affiliated with SM Entertainment, has a family including her father Han Sang-beom (former vice president of Korean Air, passed away in 2010), her mother Kim In-gyeom (CEO of French restaurant Bisson, operates three restaurants in Itaewon), and her younger sister Han Sun-hee (who worked at Maeil Dairies and then moved to Shinsegae to head the E-Mart Peacock business).

The eldest son, Jung Hae-chan (born May 13, 1998), and eldest daughter, Jung Hae-in (born May 18, 2000), both have birthdays in May. The second daughter, Jung Hae-yoon (born in 2013), and second son, Jung Hae-jun (born in 2013), are Iranian twins who were born in November.

May is also the month of his wedding anniversary and the birthdays of his two children. May, Family Month, is twice as busy for Chairman Jeong Yong-jin as it is for others.

Separately from this, looking at the monthly marriage statistics of our country's citizens from 2013 to 2022, the most marriages occurred in December. Generally, the most marriages occur in May and June, so the popular saying of 'May brides' is not true.

◆ Chairman Lee Jae-yong vs. Chairman Chung Yong-jin, similarities and differences

Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Chairman Chung Yong-jin have many similarities and differences.

First of all, they are the chairmen of Samsung Group and Shinsegae Group, which represent Korea, and they were born in 1968. Also, their maternal grandfathers are Samsung Group founder Chairman Lee Byung-chul, so they are cousins.

The two are alumni from elementary school to high school. They went to Gyeonggi Elementary School for elementary school, Cheongun Middle School for middle school, Gyeongbok High School for high school, and Seoul National University for college. Although they are alumni of Seoul National University, their majors are different: Chairman Lee Jae-yong majored in Oriental History, and Chairman Jeong Yong-jin majored in Western History.

Their preferred mobile phones are also different. Chairman Lee Jae-yong unconditionally uses Samsung Electronics Galaxy, but Chairman Chung Yong-jin enjoys various IT products and brands as a famous early adopter. He is completely immersed in the Apple ecosystem, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and AirPods Max. When a new Apple product is released, he buys it right away and quickly posts a compliment on Instagram.

Both presidents had one son and one daughter from their first marriages and have since divorced.

The MBTI of the two chairman is also very different. Chairman Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics is an ISFP, an introvert. Chairman Chung Yong-jin is known to be an INFJ.

The cards they like to use are also different. While Chairman Lee Jae-yong mainly uses Samsung Card, Chairman Chung Yong-jin uses three cards: Hyundai Card the Black Edition 2, the Green, and Starbucks Hyundai Card Spakle.

Both chairmen have a fandom that is on a par with celebrities, to the point where they are ranked 1st and 2nd in popularity among domestic conglomerates. Although they are conglomerates that have everything, they are said to be different from other conglomerates in that they are easygoing and try to communicate comfortably with the general public, unlike other conglomerates.

Chairman Lee Jae-yong appeared at the funeral of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee at Samsung Seoul Hospital in Seoul, driving a used Palisade. The chairman's two children were in the backseat. It is unprecedented for the Jae-il family to appear at an official event without a chauffeur and drive their own car.

In addition, in December 2023, President Yoon Seok-yeol visited a fish cake restaurant with business leaders, and Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong became a hot topic by inhaling tteokbokki and even refilling the fish cake soup.

◆ How many dogs does Chairman Jeong have as a pet dog owner? Dog food bowls 'Hermes Goyard'

There are many posts about dogs on the SNS of the chairman of the government. Known as a 'dog lover', he posted pictures of his dogs including Marie (standard poodle), Molly (standard poodle), Frankie (standard poodle), Chelsea (standard poodle), Kaira (dachshund), Shinsha (toy poodle), and Marichu. In 2015, he raised up to 30 dogs. At one point, when the number of companion dogs increased to around 50, he gave some away.

It is known that he has 4~5 standard poodles. The dogs he spends the most time with are Marie and Molly. These two join him at his regular cafe, Coffee Gin, birthday parties, and weekend drives.

He has such a deep affection for Molly that he even uses his own dog, Molly, as a brand for his pet supplies. Shinsegae’s Molly Shop is growing its sales by 5-10% every year, and it also sells its own (PB) pet snacks, providing a one-stop service. Marie, a white poodle, recently became the model for E-Mart’s adult dog food bags.

In addition, Shinsegae Group shopping and leisure facilities are equipped with pet-friendly and convenient facilities. All Starfield Hanam, Goyang, Anseong, Starfield Wirye, Bucheon, and Myeongji stores are implementing a 'pet-friendly' policy. In addition, they operate a pet park with a dog-only garden, drinking fountain, and toilet, and they also hold a dog sports day and pet festival every year.

Chairman Jeong even holds heartwarming events such as holding dog birthday parties and dog funerals. An industry insider said, "Chairman Jeong Yong-jin's dog's food bowls are made of Hermes and Goyard products," and joked, "I want to be born as Chairman Jeong Yong-jin's dog in my next life," showing that he lives a life more luxurious than that of a human.

Chairman Chung posted a picture of his pet dog, Frankie, on Instagram with the caption, “My successor,” debuting as the next successor to the Shinsegae Group and becoming a hot celebrity on social media.

Netizens who saw posts related to Frankie commented, “He must be the successor, judging by the way he puts his feet on the table,” “In the next life, it’s you, Frankie,” “The next owner of the Landers?” “The owner’s gorilla was reportedly flustered after seeing the ‘my successor’ feed,” “As the owner of Starfield… a shopping center for dogs,” “Super-fast promotion.”

◆ Prosecution, Fair Trade Commission investigation and registration director

Although he was promoted to chairman after 18 years, he did not take on the role of registered director, which is legally responsible for management, which caused controversy. People are pointing out that this is an irresponsible attitude of a conglomerate leader who only exercises authority and does not take legal responsibility.

The Korea Corporate Governance Forum said, “Chairman Chung Yong-jin has not been a registered director and has not been acting as a responsible manager, such as by receiving a lot of compensation without taking legal responsibility, which has led to the management crisis,” and urged him to “practice responsible management by participating in the board of directors.”

Chairman Chung Yong-jin stepped down from his position as an inside director at the 2013 regular shareholders’ meeting. In 2012, the Economic Reform Solidarity reported Chairman Chung and three other executives of Shinsegae and E-Mart to the prosecution in relation to unfair support of Shinsegae Group affiliates, and from 2014, the disclosure of executive compensation for listed companies was scheduled for registered executives. After stepping down at that time, Chairman Chung has been leading the group’s management as a non-registered executive for 11 years.

Not only Chairman Chung, the largest shareholder with an 18.56% stake in E-Mart, but also Shinsegae Group CEO Chung Yoo-kyung, who owns an 18.56% stake in Shinsegae Department Store, and Chairman Lee Myung-hee, who owns a 10% stake in E-Mart, are not registered executives.

The Daeshin Economic Research Institute pointed out in its "Report on the Governance Structure of Large Business Groups" that "the fact that there is not a single affiliate where the CEO is listed as an executive is an area that needs improvement in terms of responsible management of corporate governance" and that "the registration rate of the CEO's family as executives is 5.1%, which is lower than the 12.3% and 17.1% rates of the CEO's family as executives of the top 10 and top 26 business groups in Korea."

In 2013, Shinsegae was summoned for questioning by the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office as a suspect on suspicion of unfair support for affiliate bakeries, illegal surveillance, tailing, and monitoring of union members at E-Mart, and obstruction of union establishment. Only 14 E-Mart executives and employees and 3 executives and employees of partner companies were sent to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment, while then Chairman Chung Yong-jin and E-Mart CEO Huh In-cheol were excluded from the list of those recommended for indictment. At the time, Chairman Chung was questioned by the prosecution for 12 hours on charges of obstructing the establishment of E-Mart's union and unfairly supporting Shinsegae SVN, a bakery affiliate.

In late 2012, the Fair Trade Commission imposed a fine of 4 billion won on Shinsegae Group for unfairly supporting a company run by the second generation of the owner. As the controversy grew, Vice President Chung Yoo-kyung sold all 40% of the shares of Shinsegae SVN, a bakery affiliate. The prosecution summoned Vice Chairman Chung Yong-jin for investigation as well as Vice President Chung Yoo-kyung.

Chairman Jeong Yong-jin, who had been strongly shouting “I’m sorry, thank you, destroy communism” on Instagram, had his communications searched twice.

The government chairman wrote, “There are no ongoing trials, no executions, and no other investigations underway,” and asked, “Are you saying that you raided my communication records to prevent threats to national security?” He also released a confirmation of the provision of his communication data.

According to the certificate, on June 9th of last year, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office requested Chairman Chung's communication data, and on November 8th, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office requested the information. The information that KT provided to the prosecution included Chairman Chung's name, resident registration number, address, phone number, subscription date, and cancellation date. No call records or call content were provided.

According to Article 83 of the current Telecommunications Business Act, if a court, prosecutor, or head of an investigative agency, or the head of an intelligence investigation agency requests the provision of communication data for the purpose of collecting information to prevent harm to trials, investigations, execution of sentences, or national security, a telecommunications business operator may comply with such request.

Chairman Chung uploaded a “deletion notice” to Instagram, protesting that his Instagram posts had been deleted for reasons such as “violence and incitement.” Chairman Chung uploaded a picture of a hangover cure along with the caption, “I’ll survive till the end #destroycommunism!” Instagram deleted it, stating that it “violated guidelines regarding physical violence and incitement.” Chairman Chung has often posted on Instagram with the hashtag “destroy communism” to the effect that “I hate communism,” but this is the first time a post has been deleted.

◆ Nickname Rich, SNS Maniac, Master of 'Happy Communication'

Like other conglomerates, he had stiff nicknames such as ‘New World Crown Prince’, ‘Third Generation Conglomerate’, and ‘Group Owner’. However, thanks to his cheerful and honest communication through SNS, Chairman Jeong has now earned nicknames such as ‘Yongjin-hyung’, ‘YJ’, ‘Gorilla Baby’, ‘Jay-Rilla’, ‘Power Influencer’, ‘Chef’, and ‘Housewife Jeong’.

He is a sports fanatic, including baseball and golf fans. He caught people's attention by posting many photos of himself wearing the SSG Landers home uniform on Instagram. When Park Chan-ho, who is close with Chairman Chung, asked in a comment, "Are you a designated hitter? A relief pitcher?", he answered, "Cheering squad leader."

He showed his love and interest for the team by posting many photos of himself wearing the Landers uniform or photos of Landers-related goods. As a golf fanatic, he posts many photos and videos of his golf rounds and other daily life related to golf.

He is a heavy drinker. His drinking capacity is at least 6 bottles of soju. According to people in the liquor industry, Jeong Yong-jin is not only a whiskey lover but also a well-known advocate. He is known to know what kind of whiskey it is even in a blind test, and he is also known to have frequently traveled overseas for whiskey business.

He likes to cook and does it often. He often posts pictures of himself cooking on his Instagram, and Jung Yong-jin himself said that he is the best at and likes Chinese food the most. He invites many celebrities from all walks of life, including sports, business, politicians, and far-right figures, to his personal kitchen, “Yong Genius Kitchen,” and treats them to meals, building connections.

In Baek Jong-won's case, he called Jeong Yong-jin and asked him to buy 30 tons of ugly potatoes from Gangwon-do that were being thrown away because they didn't sell well. Park Chan-ho often goes out to the field with Jeong Yong-jin and plays golf with him wearing Landers uniforms. Noh Hong-chul is known to enjoy bike riding with Jeong Yong-jin while wearing a Landers jumper, and he also invited Yoon Seo-in and Humor Storage, who have extreme right-wing tendencies, to a meal.

The restaurants he posts are also famous on Instagram. There was even a file with an unknown source called 'Jung Yong-jin's Restaurants' that was distributed. His favorite places are 'Pyeongyangmyeonok', 'Wuraeok', 'Sariwon', etc., which are representative restaurants in Korea that boast history and tradition. When a follower asked him, "Music or food comes first?", who is known to like classical music, Vice Chairman Jeong wittily replied, "For me, food comes first. I don't listen to music when I'm hungry."

Chairman Jeong has excellent piano skills. He occasionally goes on stage to play piano pieces like Moonlight Sonata on the spot. Perhaps because of this, he has shown great interest in art and performances through Twitter. He is also known to enjoy 'house music', which involves inviting famous artists to play at home.

He is also well-versed in art and exhibitions. Chairman Jeong often posts articles related to exhibitions, such as “I’m at the Hangaram Art Museum of the Seoul Arts Center” and “The British Modern Painting Exhibition has arrived.”

Chairman Jeong is known to be a fan of the custom-made suit brand 'Bespoke' manufactured and sold by the Bund Shop. Bespoke is a brand that uses the highest quality fabrics, and a suit costs around 5 million won. Bespoke shoes are luxury goods, with a pair costing around 10 million won.

Chairman Jeong owns several cameras, including the Leica S2, Leica M9, Hassel 503cwd, Contax 645, Contax G2, and Sony NEX-5. He said, "When I buy a camera, I don't go to Shinsegae-related shopping malls or online shopping malls, but I go straight to Yongsan and buy it." He enjoys wearing expensive limited edition sneakers and also collects them. He is also a successful Lego fan. He also likes Star Wars, Mazinger Z, and Great Mazinger.

◆ SNS Craftsman? A Servant? A Power Influencer with Ambiguous Boundaries

Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin posted on social networking services (SNS) for the first time on September 16 since taking office in March.

If you look at Instagram, you can see a photo of him wearing a black T-shirt with the English phrase, "Freedom is Not Free." There is no explanation as to why he posted the photo or what context the English phrase is in. Comments are not allowed on the post.

Chairman Jeong is a representative SNS 'influencer' in the business world, with over 840,000 Instagram followers.

However, after being promoted from vice chairman to chairman in March, he has not posted anything on social media and has deleted most of his existing posts. The last post that remains is from February 19th.

Inside and outside the group, it is being analyzed that this is an attempt to show a responsible attitude as a manager in a situation where major businesses including E-Mart are experiencing a performance crisis. Of course, it is interpreted that this decision was made with the advice of Chairman Chung’s right-hand man, Kim Min-gyu, head of the Shinsegae Group Communications Headquarters and Vice President of Management Support. Vice President Kim Min-gyu joined the company as an executive director in charge of external cooperation and public relations, and after taking charge of the policy headquarters, he is quickly rising as a key figure in Shinsegae, taking control of personnel and auditing.

Chairman Jeong freely uses Instagram, Twitter (X), Clubhouse, and Thread. He is famous as an early adopter who is the first to use new SNS and new platforms. He even uses the SNS called 'Foursquare', a location-based (GPS) program, to tell people where he is and have conversations. That's why the phrases in his frequent mentions (articles) start with 'I'm at…'.

The analysis is that Chairman Chung's actions are breaking the image of a conglomerate and creating an image that allows Shinsegae Group, which operates a lifestyle-oriented distribution business, to approach consumers in a more friendly manner, such as through 'Shinsegae PR Man' and 'Yongjin's Product Experience.'

Hong Sung-tae, a professor of business administration at Hanyang University, said, "Recently, the term 'persona' has been mentioned frequently in relation to corporate marketing. It refers to the tendency to want to show the image of a company in human form," and diagnosed, "If the actions seemed pretentious, the public would feel a disconnect, but it is gaining a favorable response because it feels genuine and not unnatural."

He continued, "As CEOs open up their every move through social media, CI (Company Identity) and PI (Personal Identity) are becoming connected," and added, "Chairman Chung is showing a persona of a friendly uncle through various platforms such as Clubhouse and YouTube."

On the other hand, some point out that Chairman Chung's 'my way' style of SNS activity is similar to that of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who uses his strong fandom to make bold statements and actions. They are similar in that they enjoy communicating directly with the public through SNS, and they reveal their personal identities as well as their aspects as managers without reservation, and sometimes publicly express their political views. They also have in common that they do not hesitate to use extreme expressions that convey emotions, and sometimes show an aggressive attitude toward the media.
