European 'Korean Studies' Scholars Gather at Sungkyunkwan University... Kim Young-mi, Vincenza Durso, and Aurel Croissant Give Lectures on Problems in Korean Society

[News Space=Reporter seungwon lee] The Korean Studies Track of the East Asian Studies Institute of Sungkyunkwan University (President Ji-beom Yoo) (Director Kyung-ho Kim) will invite leading European Korean studies scholars to host the “Special Intensive Program with Leading European Scholars in Korean Studies” in July 2025.

 

This course was planned to expand the international horizons of Korean studies and promote active exchanges between academic disciplines, and will be held as a public lecture open to both domestic and international researchers and the general audience.

 

This lecture will be given by three European scholars with different research backgrounds: Professor Youngmi Kim (University of Edinburgh, UK), Professor Vincenza Durso (University of Ca' Foscari, Venice, Italy), and Professor Aurel Croissant (University of Heidelberg, Germany).

 

They will present on gender and generational conflict in Korean society, letters from regional yangban families in the 17th century, and the resilience of democracy in East Asia, respectively.

 

Professor Kim Young-mi’s lecture will be titled “Gender and Generational Conflicts in South Korea” and will be held on Monday, July 7th at 3:00 PM in Conference Room 1 of the 600th Anniversary Memorial Hall. Professor Kim is a leading figure in research on Korean politics, party systems, and gender issues, and in this lecture, she will deeply analyze the conflict structure and political implications within Korean society.

 

Then, on Wednesday, July 9th at 3 PM, Professor Vincenza Durso will give a lecture titled “Hyeonpung Gwak’s Vernacular Letters – Stories of a Local Yangban Family in 17th Century Korea (1602–1652)” in the 1st conference room of the 600th Anniversary Memorial Hall, the same location. Professor Durso will shed new light on the emotional history and writing culture of regional Korea through a comparative literary approach to traditional East Asian letters and women’s narratives.

 

The final lecture will be given by Professor Aurel Croissant on Friday, July 11th at 10:00 AM in Room 90208 of the International Hall. Under the theme of “Democratic Resilience in East Asia,” he will address the stability of East Asian political systems and the sustainability of democracy.

 

Kim Kyung-ho, Dean of the Institute of East Asian Studies at Sungkyunkwan University, said, “This lecture will be a valuable opportunity to reflect on Korean society from a multi-layered perspective through the perspectives of European scholars on Korean studies,” and added, “We welcome the participation of everyone interested in Korean studies and East Asian studies.”
