[News Space=Reporter seungwon lee] LG Household & Health Care's On The Body, a household goods company, is being criticized for advertising to an influencer (online celebrity) suspected of 'misandry'. There are even signs that it will spread into an online boycott. LG Household & Health Care deleted the advertisement and posted an apology.
On the 7th, LG Household & Health Care ran an advertisement with Influencer A (account ID Jinsu), who has 270,000 subscribers (followers).
This influencer recently caused controversy by posting misandry-like comments such as, "Men over 160cm tall, let's not accept female introductions. XX, this isn't even catching rats." He was also criticized for supporting the protests last year at Dongduk Women's University in Seoul to change to a coeducational school.
This advertisement introduces a new foot-washing product recently released by LG Household & Health Care. LG Household & Health Care collaborated with the famous Japanese animation 'Crayon Shin-chan' to introduce new peach-scented and mint-chocolate-scented products. LG Household & Health Care also provided this influencer with an advertisement for a new dog product in July of last year. The influencer wrote in the post, "The foot-washing product smells new," along with the description 'advertisement.'
LG Household & Health Care On the Body announced on the 12th through its official SNS (social network service) X (formerly Twitter) account that "as a person in charge who monitors day and night with a sense of tension, I became aware of the community post through a search over the weekend," and "after consulting with the account in question, I deleted the advertisement that same day."
LG Household & Health Care then said, "We should only deliver good news to all of our customers who love us so much, but we feel even more pained as a person in charge for causing inconvenience to you," and added, "We believe that the best we can do as a brand account is to listen to your stories with even more effort than we are doing now." They added, "We will pay close attention in all future communications." As of 2 p.m., this post had been viewed over 1.47 million times.
Since the advertisement was posted, netizens who are uncomfortable with providing advertisements to this influencer have left protest messages on LG Household & Health Care and are demanding a 'foot-washing boycott'.
LG Household & Health Care's response, revealed by a netizen, reads, "There was no intention to cause gender conflict. We had no prior knowledge that the influencer in question was a person who made misandry comments."
However, criticism is pouring in that LG Household & Health Care ran the advertisement knowing that Mr. A had made misandry remarks. On this day, screenshots of posts made by Mr. A in 2023 regarding misandry remarks were uploaded to internet communities such as FM Korea.
A netizen claimed, "There may have been cases where the LG Household & Health Care marketing team was aware of this and still entrusted the advertisement to them," and "They probably thought that level of words and actions would not be a problem."
In addition, there were netizens who were dissatisfied with LG Household & Health Care's response. They could not hide their dissatisfaction with LG Household & Health Care's active response to the 'misandry controversy' raised by some netizens.
One netizen (t**) said, "Do you think men will buy it (just because it's like this)?" and "There are plenty of substitutes." Another netizen (w**) wrote, "Is it true that it was deleted after complaints from the men's community? I should boycott it from now on."
Meanwhile, some netizens have criticized LG Household & Health Care for being sensitive to the controversy over misandry without listening to the opinions of women, the main consumers of body care products. Some are even spreading posts calling for a boycott of LG Household & Health Care products.
'Wash Your Feet' is a well-known product that is especially popular among female consumers due to its excellent cleansing functionality.
